2005 Banbury Run - Results

What a scorcher!!  The Banbury Run does have a reputation for excellent weather - but this was a bit too much....especially for the bikes!!  Most of the ice cream vans were completely sold out!

There must have been around 50 breakdowns, our recovery service was overwhelmed with 38 recoveries and we have to apologise to everyone who had to wait a long time for their arrival.  One of the Travelling Marshals, riding a Huyabusa, broke down and quite a few riders on their 1920's machines stopped to see if they could help - but it was a fuel injection problem and a bit beyond their toolkits!!

The change in the entry rules for 2005 that gave priority to Veterans, Overseas and Team entries certainly had the desired effect as we saw the number of Veterans increase from 85 to 120 and the number of Teams increase from 8 to 33 – even if some of the teams weren’t being too competitive!!  It was particularly pleasing to be able to give all the Reserve entries a ride – the last one being allocated just 7 days before the event.

The first bikes were flagged away at 10am by John Brooks, the Town Mayor of Banbury; he enjoyed the event so much that he stayed all day.  The Autojumble was sold out way before the day and was a popular attraction as usual.

The routes seemed to meet widespread approval and the pubs en-route did a roaring trade.  The Checkpoints (Thanks folks!) handed out bottles of water to all in need and Roy Warren and the other heroes who pushed machines up Sunrising Hill in the sweltering heat deserve our very special thanks.

There were quite a few contenders for the 'Best Dressed' competition and the eventual victor was Barry Care in fine style that included a very fancy striped blazer.  Geoff Wheeler won the award for Best Original Veteran, not only was he also in period attire but the Quadrant was running on special fuel that cost £124 for 5 gallons - he completed the course and won his just reward.  Des James from Brecon won the oldest Bike/Rider competition with a total of 179 years!!

The oldest machine to complete the course was the 1901 La Tortue 150cc ridden by Huw Williams from Ruthin in Wales.  Arthur Lewis who is now well into his upper 80’s must have been especially pleased to have completed the course on his 1925 Grindlay Peerless Sports 999cc and collected the Sheldon Trophy for technical interest – after numerous previous attempts.

Roy Brown (1930 Ariel) put in the best Timed performance being spot on time at the en-route checkpoints and just a minute late at the Finish.  Chris Read not only graced the front of the Programme with his wife, two dogs and his 1907 Vindec outfit but also put in the best Veteran timed run.

Many of the Teams suffered from being unable to get all three riders to complete the course on time and the Lost Three won this competition with three Silver awards.

Peter Vines, the 2005 VMCC President, presented 32 Gold and 45 Silver awards; there were 247 Timed entrants – it seems that these awards were slightly more difficult to win this year.

The route statistics were:

A Route – Veterans        - 36.1 miles     2 hours 24m         68 Timed, 53 Untimed Riders

B Route – Early Vintage  - 52 miles        2 hours 36m         69 Timed, 82 Untimed Riders

C Route – Late Vintage  - 62.6 miles      2 hours 36½m     110 Timed, 118 Untimed Riders

This year The Banbury Run was filmed by CJB Photographic who are able to supply copies on DVD or Video. All classes were filmed during the day including arrivals, car park shots, early starters and out on the roads of the Cotswolds.  For further information, they can be contacted on 01564 703215 or by email cjbphotographic{at}aol.com.
